Reporter The Lund Report, an award-winning, nonprofit online publication covering Oregon’s healthcare system, is seeking a part-time reporter to cover healthcare policy developments in the state Legislature from April 4-June 30. This position is based in Salem and includes membership in the Oregon Press Corps and a desk in the Capitol press room.

This is an amazing opportunity for an aggressive and inquisitive journalist to cover healthcare during the most critical session in recent memory. Lawmakers, at the charge of Governor John Kitzhaber, are planning to completely overhaul Oregon’s healthcare delivery system while simultaneously facing a multi-billion-dollar budget deficit in the 2011-13 biennium. It’s complex and political, but that’s what makes it so much fun to cover.

More specific details about the job:

  • Based in Salem
  • 30 hours/week
  • The reporter is expected to write an average of four 600-700-word, multi-source stories per week
  • The position requires covering 2-3 healthcare-related hearings or meetings per day (between 3.5-5 hours of sitting and listening intently)
  • The ideal candidate would have at least 2-3 years of reporting experience, including some experience covering healthcare, public policy, and/or state/county/city budgets.
  • Qualified candidates must be able to navigate a basic content management system (read: posting stories and images to website, embedding links, monitoring comments, etc. in a Drupal-based CMS)
Some social media experience desired (Facebook and Twitter)

If you are interested, please send a resume and clips to Diane Lund, Editor-in-Chief, at diane@thelundreport.org.
